Some pictures from Monterey. A seal is waving us of.

My daughter Amanda will like this picture of a sealion. Fredrik likes to be at the helm. Thinks he is a cowboy.

This is our route as we plan it. Some 6000 nautical miles. We have done 200 nm so far.
Today we leave so this will be the last pictures for a month. But there will be short postings via sailmail. Take care out there. We will. Bye for now. Håkan and Fredrik.

Checking Airmail

In five days we will be without internet and will have to rely on Airmail via our single sideband radio. So for now just checking. /Håkan

Pictures from the boatyard; a study in shapes

I hauled out at Svendsen's Boatyard the week before Håkan came, to put on some new bottompaint and make sure everything was in good order.
Maiken has a flexing propeller to minimize drag, a Maxprop. Her underwater shape makes her balanced and a bit forgiving, which is what a skipper like me needs. Grounding plate for SSB radio and the knotlog.

The forward and downward looking sonar transducer. A lot of things shows up, fish, kelpbeds, and some odd objects once in a while. It works great as long as Håkan leaves it alone, and don't try to put some kind of alarm on, he likes to play with things a bit too much some times.
Look at that shine, courtesy of Awlgrip paint, handrolled 4 years ago. It is the feature on the boat I get most appreciation for, both from onlookers and the occational mermaid

Sailing photos from SF Bay

We have left SF and set sail. I'm at the helm (steering wheel) and I feel fine. The sun is shining and the swells are rocking us. The wind at this point only some 5-10 knots. We are heading for Half Moon Bay.

Soon passing under Golden Gate and entering the Pacific ocean. I bet Fredrik is thinking that we can still turn back to our cozy marina. "It's never too late to give up" to cite one of swedens great philosophers; Ronny Eriksson. But of course in this case all to early.
And this of course is Alcatraz. Pretty close to town. I could easily swim from Alcatraz, having a wetsuite. The water is only some 14 degrees Celcius.

Here at pier 39 the tourist were waving at us. We never went there though. Strictly for tourists according to Fredrik.
Julia, my 17 year old daughter, exchangestudent in the US did San Francisco a couple of weeks ago. So familywise I've got i covered.
Some nice skyscrapers to our left. Above there were four helicopters hovering. Probably from the big news networks. I guess the news about our departure has spread already.

Let the Adventure begin

So, we are finally on our way. We left San Francisco and my home for the last 9 years, two days ago. The morning of our departure was very tranquil, with no wind and at least some kind of peace of mind that most things on the preparation lists had been done. My friend John came out in his sailboat to see us off and take some photos, considering that there was no wind to really sail in, I think he did a great job. You can see all the pictures on this link; http://spaces.msn.com/maikenpics/ . While going towards the Golden Gate Bridge under engine power, there were mixed feelings inside me. Sailing past the skyscrapers of downtown San Francisco and the cluttered hillside of Telegraph Hill with its Coit Tower, I knew that there will be places and people that I will miss from this period in my life. San Francisco and its Bay has been very good to me, and like most periods in a person's life, there were sour mixed in with the sweet (Yin mixed with Yang, bitter darkness mixed with sparkling light, ok I think you get the picture).
During the next few postings, I will try to explain the trip to the best of my knowledge. Me and Håkan will try to write in two languages, so that most of you will understand at least some parts. Well, that is it for now.

060419 kl 15.22 lokal tid. Maiken lutar betänkligt (i alla fall i min smak).

Varför får vi bara in Palo Alto?

Sorterat och stuvat in. Gäller att skriva upp vart man stuvat in pastan, olivoljan, vinägern, konserverna, mjölet mm.
